Torq energy bars

It seems obvious, but when you are exercising it is important to keep your body topped up with the fuels it needs to perform. You can do this through gels and liquids, but we think that sometimes it's nice to actually eat something!

Apart from personal likes and dislikes, there are advantages to eating solid food during longer sessions on the bike, such as minimizing the issue of delayed gastric emptying (a common problem with athletes, where the speed at which food and drink leave the stomach is affected. Symptoms of delayed gastric emptying include bloating, nausea, vomiting and constipation – not nice at all!).

Torq bars combine starch and sugars, which come from oats and raisins, with maltodextrin and fructose syrup to give a concentrated dose of fast and slow release carbohydrate.  They contain over 70 grams of carbohydrate per 100g (in excess of 40 grams per bar) and critically, the ingredients are wide-ranging in glycaemic index, which means there is both immediate and continued release of glucose into the bloodstream.  We love that they are also very low in fat, with only 2 grams of fat per 100g (just over a gram per bar). Some of the bars include Ribose, a natural sugar found within living cells, which aids cellular recovery, we couldn't tell you if this affected our recovery in practise, but we like the sound of it.

Torq Energy Bar

Some bars can be hard to chew and swallow but Torq bars are both delicious and easy to eat – a friend of ours actually uses them as a snack! A large range of flavours, all made from fairly traded fruit and with no artificial flavours or colours, should allow everyone a favourite. Apricot is our favourite at the moment and being so moist it slips down easily, even when we're blowing a gasket on a big climb.

We've been using Torq bars for some time now and although we don't use them for every training ride, we always have one in the back pocket just in case.  On other occcasions we fint tt's good to eat small portions spread out though out a session, particularly on longer interval based sessions, for extra fuel.
