Bionicon Women's Softshell jacket

We were treated to a warm April, and now May has cruelly caused us to drag out our warm riding gear. We've found the softshell fabrics to be best at coping with these changes in temperate, especially when it's dry. So it's with great pleasure that we review the Bionicon Women's Softshell jacket.

It seems that although we've been wearing softshell jackets for all our other favourite sports for years now, it's taken a while for the fabric to hit home with cyclists. The stretchy nature of the Schoeller fabric is so well suited to riding, plus it's breathable and windproof and extremely versatile. Bionicon have certainly hit the spot with this jacket, it's packed full of features and has a feminine cut and styling.

First glance doesn't suggest you'll have lots of zippers, vents and pockets to fiddle with, they are subtly hidden, so we were pretty chuffed to be able to open the arm vents to let out some heat. We usually find zippered vents closer to the arm pit area and who knew that a zippered vent from the wrist cuff could be so effective. Cool air flowed up our arms as we rode along, it really was amazing and refreshing, plus if you're wearing armpads then you have some flexibility on arm width here.

Should the weather be really cold, simply pull the wrist drawstring to keep your arms supremely toasty and, doubled with the generously spacious and high neckline, you can even keep your chin warm. The hem has an invisible rubber draw string, which is easy to adjust on the go.

Ok, so the price tag is not in the budget range for a jacket, but we've been using this jacket for skiing, running and even just hanging out in, so we've used it loads. We expect to get plenty more use from it too, as it shows no evidence of wear at all. It's not particularly lightweight on the scales, but once on, it doesn't feel heavy or cumbersome at all. You'll be fine in a shower, or even in the odd downpour thanks to the 3XDRY coating, plus it's super quick drying. Go on treat yourself!
