Marina Romoli seriously injured in car crash

On June 1st 2010, Marina Romoli from Safi-Pasta Zara Manhattan Team was training with her team in Airuno, Lecco, Italy when a car turned in front of her.  Unable to stop Marina crashed into the car window suffering deep lacerations to her face and a fractured vertabrae.

An ambulance was called and she was initially taken, unconscious, to the local hospital in Lecco.  But she was then flown to San Raffaele Hospital in Milan, where she was placed into an induced coma before under going a nine hour operation the following day.

She has had 500 stitches to try and rebuild her face.  Doctors are confident her life is no longer in danger, but there is concern around her spine and it will be decided in a few days if she needs a further operation.

Marina is due to celebrate her 22nd birthday in a few days time and also compete in this Sunday's Womens World Cup Road Race in Spain. We'll bring you more news about Marina as we receive it.
