UCI Road World Cup round 6

Sunday 6th June saw the 6th round of the UCI Women's World Cup take place on the brand new course in Valladolid, Spain. The 122.9km race took place on a largely rolling route, through the heart of the Spanish wine producing area.  However, the course also has several, short, sharp climbs to add interest.

With 30km to go in the race, Charlotte Becker (Cervelo) from Germany, Judith Arndt (HTC Columbia) from Germany and Annemiek van Vleuten (Nederland Bloeit) from the Netherlands formed a breakaway gaining over a minutes lead over the Peleton.  These three maintained their lead, with Charlotte Becker refusing to give up the lead position, allowing her to take the victory in a sprint finish.

This was Charlotte's first World Cup victory.  Marianne Vos came in fourth and, after the points allocation, took the overall lead of the 2010 World Cup Standings.

Of the 99 riders in the race, seven Britons took part.  Nicole Cooke (Team GB) finished 8th, Lucy Martin (Team GB) 16th, Lizzie Armistead (Cervelo) 23rd, Catherine Hare Willamson (Team GB) 31st, Katie Colclough (Team GB) 62nd, Nikki Harris (Team GB) 63rd place and Emma Silversides (Redsun Cycling Team) finished 77th,

Sadly one rider, who should have taken part in this race was the young Italian rider Marina Romoli from Safi-Pasta Zara Manhattan Team, who was seriously injured a few days before the race.  Our thoughts are with Marina and we wish her well in her recovery.
