Giro d'Italia Day 7

On July the 8th the Giro Donne faced the tough challenge of 110.8km from Como to Albese Con Cassano, across a mountainous terrain.

The mountains provided a long gradual ascent which split the field and allowed the mountain climbers to take full advantage of the terrain.  Unfortunately Britain's Emma Pooley (Cervelo), who yesterday won the Mountains Jersey, lost it again today after suffering a puncture allowing her rivals to race ahead of her.

However, today belonged to one specific mountain climber.  American Evelyn Stevens (HTC Columbia) who was second over the top of the first mountain climb, but then used her time trial skills to accelerate away and at one point she had over a minute and a half lead over the group which was chasing her.

For 50km, Evelyn soloed her way through the mountains, holding off the chase group which contained race leader Marianne Vos (Nederland Bloit) and defending champion Clauder Hausler (Cervelo).  Although the chase group did manage to close the gap a little bit, Evelyn managed to cross the line a full 42s in front of her nearest rivals.

Despite Evelyn's stage win the podium positions of the top three riders in the General Classification didn't change with Marianne Vos remaining in first place, followed by Germany's Judith Arndt (HTC Columbia) and Italian Tatiana Guderzo (Valdarno).  Clauder Hausler slipped back to 5th place, behind Evelyn Stevens, who moved into fourth position, whilst Emma Pooley dropped to tenth place.  Two riders did not finish the stage leaving a field of 109 riders
