Giro d'Italia Day 9

The 68.5 km course from Livigno to the Passo Stelvio (which is 2757 meters high) was long and tough with Mara Abbott (USA National Team) once again proving to be the strongest in the mountains and took the stage victory, 25 seconds ahead of Emma Pooley (Cervélo) and Judith Arndt (HTC Columbia).

In the GC, Mara Abbott now leads with 2:08 ahead of Judith Arndt.  Claudia Häusler, is in fourth place and Emma Pooley right behind Claudia in fifth.

“It was a tough race but our riders did a good job,” said Egon van Kessel, Cervélo TestTeam Sports Director. “Emma was dropped in the last descent and was a 1:20 behind the leaders when they came to the Stelvio. Carla Ryan (AUS) helped her and Emma moved back into the lead group in the first part of the uphill. She also attacked and tried to escape but it didn’t work out and finally Mara Abbott found her chance 1.5 km from the top. Emma did not have the power to follow anymore, maybe losing too much in the chase.
