Altura Second Skin Base Layer

Base layers have an important, if rather unglamorous role to play – they must wick moisture away from the body, to ensure you keep you cool and dry, avoiding any chills and thereby helping to maintain an optimum core temperature.

In that respect, Altura have scored a bull’s eye with their Second Skin Base Layer.  It is has a women’s specific and cycling specific compression fit.  That means it fits your body exactly and allows for complete freedom movement.  The compression is very mild, you could be forgiven for not even noticing it, but it does feel delicious next to your skin – that would be the soft touch cotton feel – and we liked it so much we have been wearing it to the gym, as well as on the bike.

The wicking properties of the base layer are optimised by the close fit and the knit, which is varied to allow for greater ventilation where it is most needed, that is under the arms, down the centre of the back and front.  We loved the seamless construction as well, which adds to the excellent overall feel.  It doesn't claim anti-microbial properties, but we've tested it and washed it and tested it some more, and so far there's not a hint of a bad smell.

As for colour, Altura have done well to recognise that a choice of white or black is just so yesterday!  We had light blue on test and thought it made a refreshing change.  The only drawback we could find was that it is not particularly long and gave no protection to the lower back.  That said, if it was tucked into shorts, or worn under a skin-suit and there were no problems.

It's a great base later for when the weather is warm enough to wear short sleeves or under a warmer long sleeved outer layer in Autumn and early Winter.
