TransWales day 1 _ Fiona Spotswood

Day 1 of the Trans Wales is over. The sun's out, people are lying on the grass of Knighton Rugby Club enjoying the weather, drying out their shoes and chilling in the few hours before dinner.

Drying their shoes? Oh yes, it was wet. It didn't rain today but mid Wales has seen some serious precipitation over the past few weeks and the moors were sodden. The fire road climbs were sluggish under wheel and the descents through the woods had us flinging mud up into the faces of those behind. We arrived in Knighton and popped into a local pub before crossing the timing mat. The locals were very welcoming of us - twenty filthy mountainbikers, slurping pints of cold lager, covered head to foot in Welsh mud.

The special stage today was a 500 meter sprint up a slightly climbing fire road. Some were flat out, others barely bothered. The women's category is going to be interesting; Ricky Cotter is riding well after a superbly strong season. She is chatting up all the climbs and looks lean and powerful. There are other girls here too, though, from Australia and Holland, who look strong and could well give her a run for her money. I will watch with interest and report back.

There are just over two hours until the evening meal and riders will lounge around in the marquee or on the grass, drinking tea and sharing war stories. People might suffer in different ways, but everyone has seen the same gorgeous Welsh mountain views, climbed up the same sodden grassy climbs and screamed down the same slippery fireroad through the same lush forest. That makes everyone friends and already I know the names of many of the new riders (and recognise many more from previous years).

The adventure has just begun and it is as good as ever.
