World Cyclo-Cross Champs

Marianne Vos (Netherlands) rode away from the lead group on the last lap to secure the world title for a third year in a row.  She finished alone, leaving Katie Compton (USA) and Katherine Nash (Czech Republic) 17 and 20 seconds behind her, after 40 minutes of racing.

Helen Wyman cyclo cross

Helen Wyman was the best finisher for GB in 12th place

Before the race, Hanka Kupfernagel (Germany) was tipped as a contender.  Riding in front of a home crowd, she led the way on the first lap, setting a pace that fractured the pack and only eight women could stay with her.

On the second lap, American Katie Compton, picked up the pace and the lead group reduced to just three riders; Katie, Marianne and Katherine Nash (Czech Republic).  By the mid-point of the six lap race, this group of three had an established lead and there was little doubting that, barring disaster, they would take the medals.

Katie Compton continued to drive the pace, but she was unable to drop Marianne or Katherine.  Marianne, who has won world titles on the road and track, is known to have an awesome sprint finish, but she decided not to take anything for granted and she attacked the small group on the final climb, opening up a gap that neither of her breakaway companions could close.
