Amgen Tour of California Women's International Time Trial

Olympic Champion Kristin Armstrong (Peanut Butter & Co/Twenty12) showed that she has still got what it takes by winning the invitation Amgen Tour of California Women's International Time Trial with a margin of more than 12 seconds over former World Champion Amber Neben (HTC-Highroad).  The final spot on the podium was taken by Charlotte Becker (HTC-Highroad) a full 38 seconds behind Armstrong.

Conditions for the 14km race, which started in Solvang, were excellent with sunshine and a light wind and it was the current World Champion from the Track Omnium, Canadian Tara Whitten, who got proceedings under way.

Whitten’s time was immediately bettered by US time trial champion Evelyn Stevens (HTC-Highroad).  However, Stevens was pushed off the top spot by her teammate Amber Neben and then only Olympic Champion Kristin Armstrong could better her.  Charlotte Becker rode strongly on the second part of the course to push Stevens off the podium.

Armstrong announced in 2010 that she has set her sights on defending her title at the London Olympic Games next year after what she called a “temporary retirement” to start a family - she gave birth to her son Lucas in September of 2010.  The dominant performance in California throws down the gauntlet to anyone who might be thinking she is a soft target and interestingly she is part owner of the team she rides for - Peanut Butter & Co/Twenty12.

The Olympic silver medallist, Great Britain’s Emma Pooley (Garmin-Cervelo), finished 5th, almost 50 seconds down on Armstrong.
