Proviz Ladies Luminescent Waterproof Jacket

Proviz have taken visibility to a whole new level with the Proviz Ladies Luminescent Waterproof jacket – an electroluminescent, high visibility jacket that is a first for the European market.

Proviz Waterproof Jacket

Instead of relying on the seemingly standard formula for increasing visibility, which typically combines a high visibility colour with some reflective strips and logos, Proviz have developed a jacket that actually lights up, thanks to a small battery pack that is tucked away in one of the pockets.  Power comes from a small battery pack which takes two AA batteries and can be removed if you feel the need.  We certainly didn’t as it is completely unobtrusive, but the effect is quite amazing.  Switch it on and four light-emitting electroluminescent strips – two on the front and two on the back – light up to ensure you are highly visible in all light conditions.  You can even choose between constant and flashing light.  The strips are waterproof and can withstand the abuse of some heavy wear, including the pulling on and off of a back pack, over the considerable time we have had this on test.  We are told they will last for approximately 4,000 hours, which sounds like a lot of miles on the bike!

The bottom line is, this jacket does not rely on car lights catching reflective stripes, because the jacket lights up itself – simple, but oh so clever.  That said, for good measure Proviz have included some bold strips and blocks of reflective material on the shoulders, arms and sides of the jacket, as well as piping around the collar and the tops of the arms and reflective logos on the front and back.  As if that was not enough, the zips are also reflective and, in keeping with the jacket, waterproof.

We liked the female specific cut, which is about as flattering as you could hope for whilst allowing for enough layers underneath to keep you warm on even the coldest, wettest, darkest days and nights.  Our tester commented that for her, it did become a little tight around the arms if you really pile the layers on.  The cut has a drop-tail, which keeps your lower back covered even when on the drops and there is an elastic cord with toggles, which allows you to tighten the jacket around your hips in the most extreme weather.

The jacket is waterproof and breathable, aided by a mesh lining and zipped vents in the pits.  The collar is fleece lined for comfort and the cuffs are elasticated, but with additional Velcro straps to give a really close fit if desired.  As you would expect, there is a very useful sized, easily accessible and secure zipped pocket on the back, as well as a small inner pocket, that also stores the battery pack.

The jacked comes in two colour options - high viz yellow, or a much more subtle black, to suit all tastes and needs and at £72.99 it will not break the bank.

We have not come across anything that comes close to the visibility offered by this jacket, which really does put others in the shade!
