Pearl Izumi W PRO IN-R-Cool Bib Short

Wow…. It’s not often we start a review with that comment, but we certainly were blown away by these bib shorts! Firstly how lovely to have female specific bib shorts that fit so well and are very comfortable to ride in.

Pearl Izumi bib short

The chamois is super comfortable; it’s the latest PRO 4D version, pre-shaped for a truly anatomical fit with variable density padding, giving protection where you need it most, whilst still being supple and slim-line. The chamois is also lightweight, stretches to comply with movement in the saddle and is extremely breathable, with antimicrobial protection as well. Definitely one of our favourite chamois to date!

Perhaps the most outstanding features are the bib straps, with small clip to keep them in place across the chest, and the unusual drop-tail! Let us explain more, the drop tail is designed so the rear bib strap can be undone and the back of the shorts can be pulled down should you need a wee. It’s a really handy feature for women who otherwise would have to strip off to go to the loo, not a pleasant experience when you’re out on a ride. This feature is great in theory but we found the closure a bit too high up the back to use easily, it also coincided with our sports bra strap. Undoing the closure was pretty simple as the strap is plenty stretchy and works like a standard bra hook and eye system, but re-doing the closure was a bit tricky and a lower position would have been preferable.

The short fabric is top notch, supportive yet stretchy and the anatomic fit is enhanced thanks to the huge number of panels. Even in high temperatures the fabric performs well, and the lightweight bib straps are barely noticeable once in place, the chest strap does its job admirably too. It’s always a problem where to site bib straps across or around the breasts, but these felt pretty natural and didn’t get in the way.

Top marks to Pearl Izumi for tackling the perennial bib strap issue with women’s bib shorts and we certainly appreciate the drop tail feature, perhaps with a little design tweaking all our dreams could come true!

Works really well with the PRO Jersey - read the review here.
