Women's Keirin

The very first woman’s Olympic keirin was won by Victoria Pendleton, who showed the sort of dominant form we last saw from her back in Beijing in 2008.  The first move of the final was made by Anna Meares of Australia, when she rode strongly to take up the front of the race. It was a move that Victoria did not follow, she choose her moment, just before the bell, to attack and only Shaung Guo could put up any kind of a challenge.

Victoria Pendleton celebrates Olympic Keirin title

“I can barely believe it right now," Victoria said while talking to the BBC shortly after the win. "It was really hard with the excitement with the girls (in the Team Pursuit) doing a great job and then the guys smashing the world record and winning a gold medal. I was just like ‘focus Vic, focus'."

Clearly she managed to find the focus she needed as she rode flawlessly to take the second Olympic gold medal of her illustrious career.  "I think Jan (van Eijden – her coach) will have something to say about my tactics," she continued, "but he told me not to look for their race - when it's your moment, just go. I really wanted to show what I could do and it worked out well.”

China's Shuang Guo was the only rider able to go with Victoria’s move and for a moment she looked like she might challenge, but she was unable to come past Pendleton in the home straight and took her second silver medal of these games. In a race that always throws up some surprises, the bronze medal was taken by Lee Wai Sze of Hong Kong, who had had to ride the repechage to make it through to the second round. She was clearly delighted with her medal, beating Clara Sanchez (France), Anna Meares and Monique Sullivan (Canada).

The event started with three qualifying heats, followed by a repecharge and the finals. The Lithuanian Simona Krupeckaite, made a surprise early exit from the competition, but the pre-race favourites of Guo, Meares and Pendleton progressed without incident.
