Gore Oxygen WINDSTOPPER Soft Shell Jacket

It was love at first sight with this WINDSTOPPER Soft Shell from Gore and we are not ashamed to say that we have actually been looking forward to it getting colder so that we can test it fully.

Gore Oxygen Windstopper Soft Shell Jacket

With this soft shell jacket, Gore have developed a highly water resistant, totally windproof outer layer, that is extremely lightweight and breathable.  If you have never tried soft shell, you will be amazed at just how light and supple it feels and you will be converted instantly.

Of course, there are plenty of soft shells on the market, but the addition of WINDSTOPPER technology gives the Gore Oxygen jacket a level of windproofness that most of the others can only dream of.  With this jacket there is no wind chill to sap your energy and it also effectively resists all but the most stubborn rain, whilst allowing sweat to wick away – the perfect combination in cold weather gear.

Gore always engineer their clothing beautifully – that much you can take for granted.  When they say female fit, they really mean it and this jacket is styled to perfection.  The result is that it allows you a full range of movement, whatever you get up to on the bike, and it also stays perfectly in place whether you are riding hard on the drops, or in a more relaxed position on the tops.  There is gripper tape around the base of the jacket, although whether this is entirely necessary is arguable, because we found it fitted like a tailored suit.  The slim fit with contrast seams is about as flattering as an outer layer can ever be.

We found it perfect for autumn rides with minimal layering underneath and then, when it got proper cold, we added extra thermal layers and found that we were able to manage our temperature perfectly.  We were able to keep warm without feeling like we had turned into Michelin woman, whatever the weather threw at us.

Even though we have put some good miles in while wearing this jacket, it is still looking like it did when we first took it out of its packaging.  With a 40 degree wash recommended, it has been really easy to look after, with the added advantage being that it dries really quickly.

The jacket is fleece lined, so if you get to ride with just a short sleeved base underneath, it feels very soft next to the skin.  The collar is high enough and tailored to give protection to the neck and this is also fleece lined for comfort – yes, Gore really are spoiling us!

The full length zip was super easy to use on the move with just one hand and there are three generous open pockets, plus a useful sized zip pocket – plenty of room for phone, keys and coffee money.

We really liked that the sleeves have Velcro tabs at the wrists that allow for a very snug fit, keeping the cold at bay, and of course there is the usual smattering of reflective material, including the Gore logos back and front, plus piping on the sleeves and hips.

It’s not a cheap option, but this is a jacket that will let you laugh in the face of the British winter weather whilst looking great too.
