The Welsh XC Winter Series is go!

2012 will go down as a great year in the sporting calendar, but ask any mountain biker what their abiding memory of 2012 is likely to be and the answer may surprise.

Yes, we had the Olympics, a Brit finally winning the Tour de France and we even witnessed a British player winning a major tennis open - it’s hard to believe I know - but what will stick in the minds of most mountain bikers the longest?

Mud. Lots and lots of mud!

2012 really was the year of mud tyres, dirty bikes, crud catchers and slippery fun. However, as any true mountain biker will tell you, muddy trails improve skills and the wet toughens you up.

It also happens to be the perfect preparation for a spot of winter MTB racing! After a summer like ours, there really are no excuses to not get out there and race this winter as mud is now, officially, your new best friend and rain is an everyday occurrence. If you are already a serious racer you can even treat such races as winter training for the ‘bound to be wet again’ summer season of 2013.

So with this in mind we would like to introduce the new Welsh Winter XC Series running from December to March in the stunningly beautiful Mid-Wales region.

Easily accessible from almost anywhere in Wales and the rest of mainland Britain, each race in the five round series caters perfectly for all ages and abilities, men and women, from first timers to Elite World Cup riders with organisers, Red Kite Events, maintain a very friendly and grassroots feel to the racing.

The format is simple. Riders race over multiple laps for the duration of one hour plus one lap over variable terrain made up of fire roads, woodland and a mixture of technical and flowing singletrack set amongst the truly stunning scenery that Mid-Wales is famous for.

The dates for your diary are:

9th December 2012 - Coed Trallwm MTB Centre

13th January 2013  - Nant Cerdin, Irfon Forest, Llanwrtyd Wells

3rd February 2013   - Coed Trallwm MTB Centre

24th February 2013 - Nant Cerdin, Irfon Forest, Llanwrtyd Wells

17th March 2013 - Coed Trallwm MTB Centre

Entry is only £10 per round or £40 for the whole series with entries closing seven days prior to each round – there are no on the day entries – and full details can be found at

So bring on the winter, embrace the mud and enjoy the experience. Winter is the new summer after all and who knows, we may even have a dry, mud free winter in Wales this year…far stranger things have happened!
