Gore Short Sleeved WINDSTOPPER base

We absolutely loved the Gore short sleeved WINDSTOPPER base layer last year; the combination of a windproof insert on the front, over the shoulders and wrapping around to cover the kidneys, with a highly breathable fabric on the back, made it for us a classic.  So imagine our surprise when we found they had managed to improve it, by redesigning it with an extra-long back!

Gore Short Sleeved WINDSTOPPER base

We have been promised Spring weather for a while now and when it does arrive this will be the perfect base layer.  It always feels great to shed the winter layers, but cold winds and hail showers suggest it is too soon to commit to summer weight layers just yet.  Happily, you don’t have to persist with the winter weight base for long, because Gore have designed a short sleeved base layer, with added windproofing, that is just perfect for spring and autumn.

Gore have included a layer of elastic WINDSTOPPER fabric that covers all the vital areas, while the rest of the base layer is made from a super-light, high wicking mesh, all of which works to protect your core from wind chill while helping you stay cool and dry no matter how hard you work on the bike.

The cut which, Gore call “tight fit” and we can confirm it really is form fitting, maximises the wicking ability of the light weight fabric this base layer is made from.  The fabric is almost mesh like in its weave, but Gore have managed to make it incredibly soft to touch as well – they do like to spoil us!

We love the way this base feels when we are on the bike, but it is worth mentioning that the WINDSTOPPER sections, whilst elasticated, do not have the stretch of more traditional fabrics.  However, with the under arms and back sections made only of the super stretchy, breathable fabric, there is absolutely no restriction of movement, it just feels like a really functional second skin.

As we have said, we had already nominated this a cycling classic, but it seems Gore are not ones to sit back and rest on their laurels, because they have clearly been thinking about how they could improve it and the new cut with an extra-long back does just that.  More tuck in, plus added protection for the kidneys and lower back get a huge thumbs up from us.

This base layer is still held together with flatlock seams, which do their thing to ensure chafing is not an issue and there is a reflective Gore logo on the front.

We could not find fault with the Gore short sleeved WINDSTOPPER base last year and it shows how in tune the designers at Gore are with the needs of cyclists that they know how to flatter the female form as well.
