BC National Time Trial Championships

Joanna Rowsell (Wiggle Honda) took the women’s 2013 British Cycling National Time Trial title in Stewarton, East Ayreshire on Thursday – her first national title in this discipline.  She defeated Lizzie Armitstead (Boels Dolmans) by over half a minute, with Armitstead herself finished over a minute faster than Katie Colclough (Specialized Lululemon) who took the bronze.

With Wendy Houvenaghel, who had taken back to back titles in 2011 and 2012 absent, there was going to be a new champion and Rowsell was the best of the 35 riders who contested the championship.

Rowsell, who took the gold medal in the Team Pursuit at the Olympics with Laura Trott and Dani King has, like her team mates moved over to the road this season with the intention of building more endurance.

She completed the 35.2km course in 49:25.27 and after the race commented:

"I was quoted in the media that I was focussing on the road this year, but actually I just wanted a break over the winter, just a normal winter rather than trying to peak for the track worlds in February. But to be honest I felt a bit lost at the start of the season, I didn't know if I'd be out of the back or what. So I set this as a target quite early in the season just because it was something I knew I could come and do. Initially I was quite worried about the distance being 22 miles, but now I think they suit me actually.”

She was even more enthusiastic on twitter, tweeting “Over the moon to be National Time Trial Champion :D Fantastic support and a great tough course!”

The silver medal was taken by Lizzie Armistead who is hotly tipped to take the Road Race title at the weekend.  Despite passing Laura Trott on the course, she was 32 seconds slower than Rowsell.

“The feelings were good,” she said after the time trial. “I couldn’t have gone any harder, but I wasn’t pulling a lung out to do it either so the sensations are getting better which is what I wanted.”

Lizzie tweeted: “Happy to come 2nd in national time trial champs behind @JoannaRowsell she was my pre race favourite! Great organisation! Bring on Sunday!!”
