The Helly Hansen Warm Freeze 1/2 zip combines two “super” fabrics to provide a seriously warm base layer, that boasts excellent moisture management as well.

Can there be any company that knows more about technical base layers than Helly Hansen?  The company dates back to 1877 and is built around the development of fabrics that protect and perform in the most extreme environments.

The really clever thing that Helly Hansen has done with the Warm Freeze is to combine two fabrics to maximum effect.  They have used their LIFA fabric as the inner layer to keep you dry, whilst the outer layer is super soft Merino wool, which adds a generous helping of warmth without any bulk.

LIFA is Helly Hansen's name for their own Polypropylene fabric, which they tell us retains 40 times less water than polyester, is 40% lighter and with a 60% better insulation to weight ratio.  If that’s not enough, then let me tell you it has natural anti-bacterial properties as well, is 100% hypo-allergenic and is also 100% recyclable.

Before we knew all that we were more excited by the all-natural Merino because we know from experience just how soft, warm and light it is.  Merino is often used for technical garments, because it is excellent at naturally regulating body temperature and when you do break sweat, it wicks moisture away very efficiently.  Merino is also slightly water-repellent and in common with most wools, merino contains lanolin, which has natural antibacterial properties and so does not get smelly with use.

We have been using this base layer on those really cold days, when we might otherwise have had to find some extra layers.  We hate the restrictive feeling you get when you are wearing one layer too many and so we loved that the Helly Hansen Warm Freeze has allowed us to ride with minimal layers.  Thanks to the Merino, we have felt nicely warm, whilst being true to its promise, the LIFA fabric has worked its magic to pull sweat away from the body to keep us dry.

We liked the cut, which is form fitting, without being tight.  The 1/2 zip makes it really easy to get on and off and the turtle neck provides protection for the lower neck too.

For us, base layers are the unsung heroes of the workout wardrobe and as such they often offered in only black or white.  Not so with Helly Hansen.  The Warm Freeze comes in more colours and designs than you can shake a stick at!  They have really gone to town, offering us an almost overwhelming choice, or perhaps just the opportunity to have more than one.

You will never regret the money you spend on a good quality base layer and the Warm Freeze is worth every penny.  Perfect for those days when you know you need extra layers but don’t want to feel like the Michelin man!
