Gatorade Prime

Gatorade Prime, billed as “pre-game fuel” is a convenient, ready to drink, single portion pack which delivers carbohydrates, electrolytes and B vitamins to fuel your performance.

Gatorade Prime

You know the old saying, “proper preparation prevents p*** poor performance” and getting the right fuel on board before you embark on a training session, or start a race, is a fundamental part of that preparation.

If you struggle with that or simply want a really convenient solution, Gatorade have come to the rescue by offering portion packed pouches of their highly function Gatorade Prime drink, which they recommend is consumed at least 15 minutes before exercise.

Each pouch contains 118ml of very palatable fluid which gives 24 g of carbohydrate and 98 kcal.  Carbohydrates are a source of fuel for the muscles and Gatorade are not newcomers to this game, they boast 40 years of experience and sponsorship of the GB squad and the Sky Pro Cycling team.

Gatorade Prime also contains 106 mg of sodium per pouch and this works to help replace sodium lost through sweat.

And finally there are three B vitamins included as well – B3, B5 and B6.  These are not only an important part of a healthy diet, they also play a role in energy metabolism – converting carbohydrate, fat and protein into usable energy.

There are two flavours available: Mixed Berry and Orange – both are really quite pleasant to drink.  The fluid is more like a squash and not viscose like a gel, so there is no need to wash it down with water.  Simply rip the top off the pouch and suck it down, not forgetting to dispose of the empty pouch carefully of course!

Our tester, track cyclist Jan Birkmyre, has just started the speed part of her programme.  These are ridden at the Newport velodrome and the undertaking is not cheap in terms of time or money.  “I am always conscious that I must get the most out of these sessions and ensuring that I have taken on enough of the right kind of fuel is absolutely critical to that”.   Following the instructions on the packs, she has been taking a pouch of Garotade Prime 15 minutes before heading out on to the track for a warm up.  20 minutes after that the real work begins and this continues (with breaks) for two hours.

So far the sessions have been going well.  She reports that her performance has been super strong and there have been no mid-session hunger pangs either.  Of course, it is important to remember that once you start exercising it is still vital to keep hydrated by drinking water, preferably with a carbohydrate powder mixed in, whether you have taken Gatorade Prime beforehand or not.

Gatorade Prime is a super convenient, portion pack of pre-training fuel that is just so easy to drop into your kit bag and very pleasant to drink.
