2XU Compression Performance Run Calf Sleeve

The 2XU Compression Performance Run Sleeve is a relatively new addition to the range and offers heavy duty compression for the calf area, in a rainbow of colours that will really make you stand out from the crowd.

2XU Compression Performance Run Calf Sleeve

Our tester for the 2XU Compression Performance Run Sleeve was Anna Railton and as she has just embarked on a training plan for the Helly Hansen Killarney Adventure Race, she was the perfect person to put these through their paces.

She likes to make a statement with her kit, so she chose Fluro Orange and when she first saw them she said “wow, these are bright, they will clash with all my kit - hurrah!”.  There are eight gorgeous colours to choose from and that includes black and white if you are not quite as “adventurous” as Anna.

It is also worth mentioning that 2XU really do know how to delight us – even the packaging is a joy to behold and you are left in no doubt that you have bought a top quality piece of kit, even before you try it on.

The 2XU Compression Performance Run Sleeve offers a stronger compression effect than their more lightweight offering, the Calf Guard.  They have achieved this by making the Run Sleeve in their more powerful PWX compression fabric, which gives a nice supportive squeeze over the lower leg.

One of the stand-out features for us is how well they have nailed getting graduated compression just right.  That is where compression is greatest at the bottom of the leg and aimed at helping blood flow up the leg, and they have achieved this without the need for any seams at all.  This makes them super comfortable to wear and of course means there is no chafing.  The top cuff is snug enough to ensure they never slipped down (and yes, we really have put them to the test in this respect!) but not so tight that you feel them dig into your skin – perfect!

2UX have worked hard to get the breathability just right too.  Their “zoned breathability panels” around the rear of the calf work really well – essentially you don’t feel like the bottom half of your legs is encased in sweaty fabric, even in the glorious heat we have been enjoying.

The PWX fabric is antibacterial, so no nasty kit bag smells here, and we found the fabric wicked away sweat as fast we could work it up.  We also liked the UPF50+ sun protection it offered, even if it did makes for some interesting tan lines!

Of course it is impossible to measure how much these helped us recover, because if we recover better, we just train harder the next day!  There is of course plenty of research to support the benefits of compression wear.  Put simply, it has been found to improve blood circulation, which in turn increases oxygen delivery to working muscles, which enhances their performance and also helps the body to eliminate lactic acid and other waste products from exercise.  Our guide to compression wear is here.

Certainly Anna reported that after training with and without them, she would definitely choose to wear them.  She also felt that they offered her that little bit more reassurance, which made her feel generally more “on it”.

The verdict? The 2XU Compression Performance Run Sleeve offers serious compression for the calf area, using high tech fabrics and in a great array of colours.
