HH Warm Flow High Neck ½ Zip

The Helly Hansen Warm Flow High Neck ½ zip is a wolf in (merino) sheep’s clothing, combining Lifa Flow fabric to move moisture away from the body, with a super soft, no-itch merino wool for warmth and thereby giving you the best of both worlds.

At BikeEnvy we’ve got a bit of a thing for Helly Hansen base layers – they have been innovating with new fabrics and technology since 1877 and now they are fusing this knowledge with women’s specific designs and an amazing range of colours – what’s not to love?

We have had the Warm Flow High Neck ½ zip on test for a few weeks now and such is our liking for it that we have been wearing it with jeans as well as out on the bike and in the gym – we wash it in between times of course!  The point of confessing just how much we are wearing this is to underline how great it feels on and how good it looks, and all that is before we talk about how warm it is or how well it wicks away sweat.

In creating the ultimate base layer for cold weather activities Helly Hansen have used a combination of two fabrics in the Warm Flow High Neck.  Next to the skin is a layer of their unique Lifa® Flow technology.  This fabric features an open weave and uses hollow fibres, which they tell us imitates polar bear fur (you’ve just got to love that!) and it adds up to being both warmth and has an excellent ability to move moisture away from the body.

Helly Hansen goes as far as saying that this fabric wicks perspiration away from the skin faster than any other base layer technology.  Really the ability to move sweat away from the body is one of the most basic requirements of any base layer and the first step in keeping us warm and comfortable whilst exercising, but the imitation Polar bear fur (did we mention that we LOVE that concept?) that is next to the skin is only half the story.  In addition to this, the HH Warm Flow High Neck base features pure merino wool on the outer layer to give the wearer added warmth.

There’s no doubt that Helly Hansen have made some pretty bold claims about the performance of this base layer and so we have risen to the challenge and we have been wearing it repeatedly to understand whether those claims are fair.  Happily, the arrival of the Warm Flow base layer coincided with the start of our winter training which gave us the ideal opportunity to test it.  Add in the recent cold snap and we have been able to properly assess both the warmth and the wicking abilities.  To cut a long story short, our tester tells us this base layer was even better than she expected in terms of both warmth and wicking ability, and it is apparently already her go-to base layer for cold weather riding – she says she can’t get enough of it!

The cut is figure skimming, rather than figure hugging (probably one of the reasons it looks great with jeans), with enough length to allow for a good amount tuck in with winter longs and a high neck that gives just the right amount of protection when you’re on the bike.  Flatlock seams mean no chafing and it is allergy neutral as well.  The ½ zip makes it easy to get on and off, while also allowing for a bit of ventilation, and the arms are finished with a nice close fitting cuff (in a contrasting colour) that keeps chilly air out.

Whatever your activity, if you want to be comfortable this winter, an investment in a good base layer is a must and we think the Helly Hansen Warm Flow High Neck ½ zip is a great buy.  It’s a super high tech piece of kit that is both warm and incredibly wearable, as well as looking awesome on and off the bike.
