Gore Element Windstopper Soft Shell Lady Jacket

The Gore Element Windstopper Soft Shell Lady jacket is a beautifully made, warm, windproof, winter jacket that is big on comfort.

Gore Element Windstopper Soft Shell Lady Jacket

Gone are the days when keeping warm required layer upon restrictive layer of clothing.  Now a well-chosen winter jacket teamed with a base layer that suits the conditions, is all you need and our choice of winter jacket this year has been the Gore Element Windstopper Soft Shell Lady Jacket.  The Windstopper technology, combined with fleeced backed, soft shell fabric makes this jacket really warm, breathable and totally windproof, whilst also having just enough give to allow for a full range of movement – it is cycling jacket Nirvana!

Gore does offer warmer jackets in their range, but we honestly haven’t needed anything more than the Element Windstopper Soft Shell jacket this winter.  We do have a wonderful choice of base layers though, including the Gore Windstopper Lady Thermo Shirt long  which we have been testing at the same time.  This gives us a double whammy of Gore’s wonderful Windstopper technology which is not to be underestimated.

The Element Windstopper Soft Shell Lady jacket is “comfort fit” which is the most relaxed cut Gore offer.  That means there is plenty of room for additional layers should you feel you need them and it gives total freedom of movement while still looking feminine.  And it is testament to Gore’s understanding of the female form on a bike that this jacket ends in a wide hem, with no need for elastic or silicone to keep it in place.

One of the more unusual features of this jacket is the elasticated sleeve cuff, sewn into the arm about two inches from the end.  This cuff extends out from the end of the arm and has a thumbhole to keep the sleeve perfectly in place, which results in the best possible interface with your gloves.  We have not tested this system before but we are converts to it now, because the upgrade on the overall warmth is just incredible and there is no downside at all.  We thought it might affect the comfort or fit of the gloves underneath, and perhaps if you are wearing gloves with a huge, bulky cuff it might not work quite so well, but with our choice of medium weight winter gloves it was quite a revelation.

With the Gore Element Windstopper Soft Shell jacket you also get two good sized, zipped front pockets, which are much easier to access than the more usual rear pockets.  Our concerns that anything put in these pockets might restrict movement proved unfounded – we always carry a phone and keys in our pockets but in truth we did not even think about them once we were on the road and we have clocked up some serious miles whilst wearing this jacket.

We loved the fleece lining in this jacket which is an important feature of the high collar as well.  Even the wind flap that sits behind the zip is fleece lined and the whole package is toasty warm.

Reflective logos and inserts front and back give a bit more visibility, but if you are really serious about being seen we reckon the neon yellow option can’t be beaten.

All in all, the Gore Element Windstopper Soft Shell jacket is a really well made, warm, wind proof jacket that we have worn repeatedly and in the very worst weather this winter has thrown at us and all with no complaints at all.
