Helly Hansen Women’s ADEN CIS Coat

The Helly Hansen Aden Coat is a fantastically versatile waterproof coat.  The zip in / out fleece means it can be worn three ways; with the fleece in it is a warm insulated jacket, unzip the fleece for a lightweight fully lined shell jacket, or wear the fleece on its own.

Just because it is summer does not mean you can stow all your wet weather gear away and we know you don’t need us to tell you that, but the challenge can be choosing which items to keep on hand for a rainy day – for us they need to be genuinely waterproof, highly adaptable and great looking as well.

The Helly Hansen Rain Wear collection, just launched, seems to have an option for everyone, whatever your style, and we have had the pleasure of testing their Aden coat.  It ticks all our boxes because it is quite gorgeous – it manages to be both feminine and flattering, with a shape that follows the female form, and is slightly longer that other jackets we have tested.  But the stand out feature of the Helly Hansen Aiden coat is the 3 in 1 system that means it can be worn as a shell jacket, or with the fleece liner zipped in it becomes a super warm insulated jacket, or the third option is just to wear the fleece alone.  It is a little capsule wardrobe all on its own!

It is one of the oldest jokes in the book that the English are obsessed with the weather and with good reason, we get three seasons in one day on a regular basis.  If you are a cyclist, travelling to a venue for training or racing, you will undoubtedly feel you need to cover all the bases.  We have spent hours at a track meeting waiting for the track to dry, while trying to stay warm and dry ourselves, or we have got wet riding a race or training session and then needed to grab something warm and dry quickly as wetness, temperature and tiredness take their toll on the body and in all of these cases the Helly Hansen Aden jacket seems to have been designed for us.

With Helly Hansen you always get the very best technical fabrics available – their investment in research and development is unrelenting and, over a number of years of testing their garments, we have come to trust that when they make something to be waterproof, it really is.  The Aden jacket is made from 2 ply fabric with a water repellent coating and it has sealed seams, so it does just what it says on the tin – it offers great protection from the rain (and we have had the “pleasure” of testing it in some serious downpours), as well as being fabulously warm and breathable too, so if you want to get active, it will move sweat away from the body.

The construction of the Aden jacket just oozes quality.  The shell is fully lined, this adds to the wearability and also helps with the breathability too.  The fleece zips in just beside the main jacket zip and there are generously sized zip ports at the top to keep the zip pulls stowed neatly away.  There is also a storm flap that covers the zip to keep the wind and rain out and the pockets are deep, fleece line and very comforting when open but they can be zipped shut for security.  The elasticated cuffs are adjustable with Velcro tabs, so they can be worn relaxed or close to the wrists to keep the elements out and there is a pull cord around the bottom hem to enable you to cinch things in when warmth is the priority.

The cut is a little longer than most coats we have tested, stopping mid-thigh rather than just covering the bottom and this gives it a head start in the warmth stakes.  We’ve never much cared for carrying an umbrella, so a good hood is a must for us and in the Aden jacket Helly Hansen have done a great job.  When it is not needed it packs away neatly into the fleece lined collar of the coat, but when you want it you will find it is easy to deploy and adjust using just one hand.

We think the Helly Hansen Aden coat is quite possibly the perfect coat for anyone that demands the best of both form and function from their clothing.  It is easily smart enough to wear around town, whilst being technical enough for when you get active and then there is the fleece for relaxing in too.
