Helly Hansen Warm Freeze ½ Zip Base Layer

The Helly Hansen Warm Freeze ½ zip combines two “super” fabrics to provide a seriously warm base layer that boasts “professional level warmth and moisture management” as well.

Helly Hansen Warm Freeze ½ Zip Base Layer

Dating back to 1877 and built around the development of fabrics that protect and perform in the most extreme environments, Helly Hansen is surely the market leader for technical base layers and the Warm Freeze ½ zip is a really great example of what they do well.

The clever thing that the people at Helly Hansen have done with the Warm Freeze is to combine two amazing fabrics to maximum effect.  They have used their LIFA fabric as the inner layer, which sits next to the skin to keep you dry, whilst the outer layer is super soft Merino wool, which adds a generous helping of warmth without any bulk and it complements the wicking ability of the LIFA fabric to keep you dry.

LIFA is Helly Hansen's name for their own Polypropylene fabric, which they tell us retains 40 times less water than polyester, is 40% lighter and with a 60% better insulation to weight ratio.  If that’s not enough, then let me tell you it has natural anti-bacterial properties as well, is 100% hypo-allergenic and is also 100% recyclable.

Before we knew all that we were more excited by the all-natural Merino wool, because we know from experience just how soft, warm and light it is.  Merino is often used for technical garments because it is very good at naturally regulating body temperature and when you do break out in a sweat, it wicks moisture away very efficiently too.  Merino is also slightly water-repellent and in common with most wools, merino contains lanolin, which has natural antibacterial properties and so does not get smelly with use.

We have been using this base layer on those really cold days when we might otherwise have had to find some extra layers.  We hate the restrictive feeling you get when you are wearing one layer too many and so we love that the Helly Hansel Warm Freeze allows us to ride with minimal layers under our autumn or winter jacket and we’re sure it’s going to see lots of action this winter.  Thanks to the Merino, we have felt nicely warm, whilst being true to its promise, it has worked with the LIFA fabric to pull sweat away from the body to keep us dry.

We make no apology for particularly loving kit that can be used off the bike and this base layer works well with jeans on a cold day, is a great cover up on the way to the gym or yoga and of course, does its thing well during a cheeky winter-season run too.  In fact we haven’t been able to put this base away since it landed in our offices, whether we are lounging about or working up a sweat.

For us, base layers are the unsung heroes of the workout wardrobe and as such they are often offered in only black or white.  Not so with Helly Hansen; the Warm Freeze comes in more colours and designs than you can shake a stick at – 21 to be precise – an almost overwhelming choice and in a size range from 2XS to 2XL.

You will never regret spending money on a top quality base layer and the Helly Hansen Warm Freeze is worth every penny and will reward you whatever your activity.  Perfect for those days when you know you need extra layers but don’t want to feel (or look) like the Michelin man!
