Helly Hansen Ullr Midlayer Jacket

The Helly Hansen Ullr Midlayer Jacket is a lightweight layer made with double knitted fabric that wicks away moisture like nothing we have tried before, whilst also keeping you warm.  It begs to be worn during those activities when you want to push yourself to new limits, without a second thought for what you are wearing.

Helly Hansen Ullr Midlayer Jacket

Think Helly Hansen and we bet you will think about their highly technical gear that offers protection from the very harshest elements.  And that’s fair enough given that their founder was sea captain Helly Juell Hansen, who back in 1877 developed fabrics that would protect sailors from the worst that the Norwegian weather could throw at them.

These days Helly Hansen gear delivers against the much broader and rather inspiring message ‘Alive since 1877’ as they have developed their professional grade apparel to “inspire people to feel alive in the outdoors”.  For us that is all about the thrill of riding on the road, or on the trails, in any weather and with the adrenaline pumping though your veins.  In those moments you don’t want to think about your kit but for that to work your gear has to be very good indeed.

The Helly Hansen Ullr Midlayer jacket is just such a piece.  We fell in love instantly, because it was lightweight, ridiculously stylish and packed full of features that made it a seriously high performance layer too.

The body of the Helly Hansen Ullr Midlayer Jacket is made from a double knitted fabric that uses Helly Hansen’s Lifa Flow technology, more typically used in their base layers.  This fabric gives the Ullr jacket a truly outstanding ability to move moisture away from the body, whilst also offering surprisingly good insulation.

The Ullr jacket is ultimately very versatile because it can be worn as a mid layer on cooler days or a top layer on milder days, or when you are really pushing yourself.  The relatively loose cut worked well on the mountain bike and also out running, and it was easily stylish enough to be worn into the cafe afterwards too.  We loved how it looked in action and when we were in recovery mode!

The shoulders, hood, and the back of the arms from elbow to wrist, are covered in a slick, windproof fabric that adds to the protection offered by this lovely jacket.  Helly Hansen have also added a pull cord around the bottom hem to allow adjustment to suit the weather and your activities, and there are thumb holes at the end of the generously cut arms that keep the sleeves in place too.

As you would expect from Helly Hansen, everything about this jacket is nicely finished; flatlocked seams are used throughout to reduce the bulk and the sleeves are finished with a neat piping.  The pockets are edged in the same slick fabric that is used across the shoulders and there is a full length, high quality YKK zip, with a handy little tab that makes it easy to grab with gloved hands to make adjustments.  Fully zipped pockets give plenty of secure storage space and the hood has a high viz insert across the top edge, whilst the HH branding is subtle and chic.

The first time we grabbed this for testing we were a little surprised by the number of compliments that came our way, it is almost wrong that a jacket as technical as this could also be so admired for its looks, but we enjoyed the attention and if you are lucky enough to go skiing this winter, this will be an instant hit whether you are free-riding or cruising the pistes.

The Helly Hansen Ullr Midlayer Jacket is a beautifully constructed, stylish and highly versatile jacket that takes moisture management to a new level and lets you do whatever you do to enjoy the great outdoors.
