Helly Hansen Women’s Ullr Fleece

The Helly Hansen Women’s Ullr Fleece is a fleece but not as you know it; the combination of double knitted fleece fabric with carefully placed slick faced, wind resistant panels, with a brushed interior make this a warm and super-versatile layer.

The Ullr range is named after the Norse God of all things winter and if he was doing his thing today, we reckon he would embrace the Ullr range.  And this fleece from his eponymous range is no ordinary fleece, it is a really warm, high wicking, ultimately layerable item, all of which adds up to it being seriously versatile.

We have never come across a Helly Hansen fleece that we did not instantly love, so when we say they have stepped up their game with the Ullr Fleece it is high praise indeed.  The double knitted fleece is really warm but retains the amazing wicking properties that you get with Helly’s wonderfully technical fabrics.  It is gloriously soft to touch but compared to other fleece fabrics, you can feel that it is a little more dense, without being bulky.  The result is a level of insulation which means it works well as a top layer on warmer days or a mid-layer when it is properly cold.

It is the addition of the slick windproof panels on the arms, back, around the neck and across front chest area which is the trademark feature of the Ullr Fleece.  This upgrades the warmth of the double knitted fleece and makes it work well as a top layer when the weather allows.  As if that were not enough Helly Hansen have added windproof zips (even to the pockets), a high collar, double cuffs at the wrist and a drawstring around the bottom hem to keep the elements out – we reckon that ticks all the boxes!

The fit of the Ullr Fleece is relaxed and in combination with the stretch in the fabric (the windproof panels are no less stretchy than the fleece panels) it allows for a fabulous range of movement.  Team it with a quality base plus top layer and you will be laughing in the face of the very worst of the weather – we speak from experience here as storm after storm has swept across the UK, we have grabbed the Ullr Fleece, thrown a shell or an insulated layer over the top and simply refused to be confined to indoors.

It is worth pointing out that the warmth of the Ullr Fleece, which is a function of the combination of fabrics, does not mean it is bulky and for that reason it works really well under all the top layers we already own and honestly that was a pleasant surprise.

And the lovely designers at Helly Hansen have not compromised on style either – we received lots of compliments while wearing it, thanks to the overall design and feminine shaping – and whilst the high tech, windproof zips might have been over the top for some of the occasions we wore it (we couldn’t help ourselves!), we did not let that put us off, because we found it looked good enough to wear to the gym or with jeans around town, whilst of course it really comes into its own when braving the elements out walking or skiing.

If you are looking for a layer that will work alone or to pack a punch under the outers you already own, that is technical, stylish and seriously warm then the Helly Hansen Ullr Fleece is for you –chock full of well thought out features that will work all year round.
