We’re not too proud to admit we’ve had some epic fails, none more spectacular than walking into the pool to cool down after a seriously long and very hot ride in Mallorca, we were straight off the bike and the cold water felt so good ... and then we remembered the iPhone in the back pocket of our cycling jersey.  Not surprisingly, it was never quite the same again.  It was an expensive lesson.

And while that demonstrates a level of stupidity we sincerely hope you will never equal and one we hope never to repeat ourselves, keeping a phone close to hand but protected from the elements and good honest sweat is a challenge for everyone taking to the great outdoors for any activity.

We have tried good old plastic bags but they are far from an elegant solution and not 100% waterproof either.  On top of that, if you need your phone in a hurry, you have to actually take it out of the bag before use and then dry the bag or replace it if it does get wet.  So imagine our delight when we were asked to test the Overboard Waterproof phone case.

Put simply, it is a robust and totally waterproof case which also allows for full touchscreen functionality, excellent call and sound quality, as well as the use of the camera and all without the need to remove the phone from the protective case.

We’ve had the small Overboard Waterproof phone case on test, which at 15 x 7.5 x 15cm was the perfect fit for an iPhone 6, 7 and 8 as well as other similar sized android phones.  If you have a Plus sized phone Overboard have accommodated that with a larger phone case which measures 20 x 9 x 20cm.

We found the small Overboard Waterproof phone case fitted the iPhone 6 perfectly and with very little excess space, which meant that it dropped neatly into the back pocket of a cycling jersey or jacket.  It also comes with a handy lanyard, which attaches to the case via a small split ring and there is a karabiner for clipping the ensemble to belts, bags or anything else you might like to attach it to.

For us the lanyard allowed for the phone hang around our neck and then be tucked it into the back of a crop top style sports bra, which was very useful when riding a time trial in a skinsuit with no pockets and the fact that there was even room to put the car key in there too make it quite perfect and so very much better than just shoving everything down our crop top and hoping we don’t get too sweaty – not the ideal state of mind to start a race in!

The Overboard Waterproof phone case is closed using their “Slide Seal System” which uses two sliding tabs which are pulled outward to seal and pushed in towards the centre to open the bag.  Once sealed everything inside the case, which is made from durable TPU plastic and has welded seams, is 100% protected from sweat, water and grit and the waterproof qualities are guaranteed to a depth of 19 feet or 6 meters – not something we needed on the bike but we like a brand which believes in and stands by its claims and by all accounts Overboard is just such a brand.

The case comes in two colour options: black or blue, with clear windows front and back to allow for visibility and use of the screen or camera functions.  One of the biggest surprises was that the microphone and sound worked just as well in the bag as they did out of the bag – no one we called when our phone was safely sealed inside the Overboard Waterproof phone case could tell any different and the quality of sound when playing music was similarly unaffected.  It should go without saying that it does not allow for fingerprint recognition, so if you use that technology you have to fall back on using your pin code but that is a small price to pay to protect what is undoubtedly a pricey and very personal bit of kit that none of us can afford to damage or lose.

It is worth noting that Overboard also offer waterproof arm pack and waterproof belt pack which would work really well if you enjoy running too.

The Overboard Waterproof phone case is a robust and reliable solution to protecting your phone whatever you get up to, keeping it safe from water damage, sweat, sand and dirt – all of that and it is environmentally-friendly biodegradable thermoplastic polyurethane which keeps our conscience clear at the same time.
