base layer takes functionality to the next level with an astonishing ability to wick away sweat, combined with protection from the sun

It doesn’t seem long ago that we were wearing the Helly Hansen Lifa Merino on and off the bike for warm and now, in the hottest temperatures we can remember, we are reaching for the Helly Hansen Lifa Active Light to keep us cool, comfortable and covered up for protection from the sun.

It is easy to see how Helly Hansen have got us covered in the colder months, the Scandinavian company does warm, wicking fabrics like no other, but clearly they understand our needs in hot weather too because the Helly Hansen Lifa Active Light has been the one we reach for as temperatures soar this summer and we enjoy training in record breaking heat.

Get sun-smart and keep cool with the Helly Hansen Lifa Active Light Base

When we see a yellow warning to “be aware” from the Met Office we know it is time to take extra care with our choice of training kit.  We love being outdoors and firmly believe there is no such thing as the wrong sort of weather – thanks to Helly Hansen we have got all eventualities covered and just now our priorities are for kit that will move sweat away from the body and protect us from the sun’s harmful rays, and that is just what the Helly Hansen Lifa Active Light base layer does.  In a choice of long sleeved or singlet this featherweight base does double duty moving moisture away from the body thanks the outstanding Lifa Active technology, while also offering UPF protection from the sun.

The key to the remarkable ability of this base to manage moisture and thereby keep us cool and comfortable is the two layer construction of the Lifa Active fabric.  This puts Lifa fibres next to the skin to move moisture away from the body and these combine with wicking technical fibres on the outside, which ensure sweat evaporates to keep us dry.  If it sounds clever then that’s because it is.  We’re not sure exactly how they have managed it but we are sure it works and that is why we have awarded a rare 10/10 for performance.

The fit is body skimming rather than tight and we found the Helly Hansen Lifa Active Light base works well under a cycling jersey or worn alone when running or walking

We have been using the Helly Hansen Lifa Active Light base layer inside in the gym and outside on the bike and running.  In truth, we expect to be comfortable in Helly Hansen kit, we think they are the original and the best when it comes to base layers and they have been relentless in developing new fabrics – so it comes as no surprise that this is a great bit of kit that we now wonder how we ever managed without.

The fit is body skimming rather than tight and we found the Helly Hansen Lifa Active Light base works well under a cycling jersey or worn alone when running or walking. Of course the seams are flat-locked for comfort and you can rest easy knowing it is allergy neutral and non-itchy too – features which come as standard from Helly Hansen.  And because this is Helly Hansen you don’t have to choose from black or white, there are some great colour options to brighten up your training wardrobe.

Embrace this glorious summer with the Helly Hansen Lifa Active Light base, a featherweight layer which offers protection from the sun and standout moisture management thanks to the high tech fabrics
