Overboard Waterproof Backpack

Whether you are commuting, walking, travelling, involved in water sports, or just an occasional backpack user, we think you will appreciate the very serious protection OverBoard backpacks offer.  Robust, comfortable and 100% waterproof, this is a serious bit of kit that will protect your gear from water, snow, sand, dust and dirt.

Overboard Waterproof Backpack

We reviewed the OverBoard Waterproof Phone Case and found it to be great for protecting a phone while on the bike or out and about, and the backpack has been just as positively received.  It comes in three sizes; 20, 30 and 45 litres – we had the 20 litre on test and found this size works well as a day pack, easily accommodating a computer, spare clothing, a camera and some food – everything you would need for commuting or bike based adventure.

OverBoard, now a global company, was founded back in 2006 by friends Dan and Joel who had struggled keep their valuables safe from water and sand while travelling.  It is their experience which has driven the pursuit of uncompromising quality and today they are seen as an industry leader when it comes to waterproof bags, with distributors in over 70 countries.

OverBoard use a roll top design to secure the contents inside the backpack

Every product in the OverBoard range is subjected to rigorous testing, so you can buy with confidence knowing it has been built to withstand the most extreme conditions and that the claims made have been substantiated.  So when they say this backpack is waterproof, they mean that it is 100% water tight and will withstand monsoon rain and even complete submersion in water (in fact it will float) which we reckon more than covers off anything we might want to use it for!

Given the seriousness of the OverBoard range, we found the level of comfort a pleasant surprise.  We thought that that might be compromised in the bid to keep the elements out, but not so, the shoulder straps are well padded, perfectly placed and fully adjustable.  Add to that the substantial chest and waist straps which add a level of stability that is really appreciated when riding off road.  The back of the pack is ergonomically designed and padded, with raised sections allowing for air flow between the pack and the wearer’s back.  When it is not worn as a back pack the grab handle at the top of the pack is really handy too.

If you are looking for a backpack that will stand the test of time, offers outstanding comfort, with some well thought out features and, of course, total protection to your valuables from the wet, sand and dirt, then the OverBoard backpack is just what you have been waiting for

OverBoard use a roll top design to secure the contents inside the backpack – you simply roll the top over three times and lock the plastic buckles together, then pull the two inch webbing strap over the top of that and secure the Velcro tab.  Once done up, there is absolutely no chance of it working loose or coming undone, unless you really want it to, and that adds a level of security against pick pockets which commuters and travellers will really appreciate.  Deep inside the generous body is a single zipped pocket, which is handy for things you want to keep super-safe, like keys or a passport for example.

We liked the addition of reflective strips to the front of the bag and shoulder straps, where there are useful D rings and a karabiner which allow for the attachment of items you might want quick access to.  On the subject of visibility, we tested the blue but reckon the yellow would be a better colour for riding in traffic.

OverBoard backpacks are robust, comfortable and 100% waterproof

There are lots of little touches and features that OverBoard have added to this backpack that we have come to love.  Bear in mind that once everything is sealed into the main water proof body it is not quick to gain access, so the addition of mesh pockets on the sides and front are really handy.  Large enough for a water bottle, phone (in the OverBoard phone case obviously) clothing you might want to grab or stow on the move and perhaps some food and a map.

And there is no doubt it is made to last.  The material OverBoard have chosen for the sides and base – where the pack will get most wear – is particularly substantial and the seams are welded.  All of the nylon straps are well finished and securely stitched.

Overall, there is very little that we would change.  In fact the only criticism we might have had is that the main body of the pack has only one small pocket inside and so it is difficult to organise items inside this space.  Clearly OverBoard have worked that out for themselves because they recently added Backpack Tidy to their range and at £14.99 we think this would be well worth the investment.  This allows for a tablet, keys, pen, map, money and even a 14” laptop, to be tidily stored away.
