dhb Aeron LAB Women's All Winter Jacket

If you thought it was impossible to look good and keep warm, think again, because dhb have lent on the experts at Polartec to bring out some choice pieces that are both wind and water-proof, warm but also breathable, while also looking really sharp.

dhb Aeron LAB Women's All Winter Jacket

The dhb Aeron LAB Women's All Winter Jacket has quickly become our favourite jacket for this winter because it is the first winter jacket we have tried which is genuine flattering to the female form, while also being seriously high performance.

We love a coordinated look when we are on the bike, so when we were offered the jacket and bib tights from the dhb Aeron LAB range we did not hesitate to say yes.  We reviewed the dhb Aeron LAB Women's All Winter Bib tights here and have enjoyed testing the jacket alongside them, picking the coldest, wettest and most miserable days to put them through their paces.  We never let the weather stop us training but it does test our resolve sometimes and that is one of the reasons why we never compromise and only ever reach for top quality kit on those days because, honestly, it does not have to be grim if you have the rights clothes.

The key to the outstanding performance of the dhb Aeron LAB Women's All Winter Jacket is the use of three different Polartec fabrics which have been used in different panels to optimise warmth, breathability and protection from the wind and rain.

We really don’t enjoy wearing lots of heavy layers to keep warm but it felt like an act of faith to follow the recommendation from dhb and wear just the dhb Aeron LAB Women's All Winter jacket with a single base layer on a cold day.  Of course we always use a top quality base and we are loving the Helly Hansen Women’s H1 PRO LIFA Seamless for warmth and breathability this season.  It felt almost liberating to be wearing such light layers on a cold day and we could only hope we did not regret it after a few hours on the road.

Happily the dhb Aeron LAB Women's All Winter Jacket proved to be everything it promised and now that we have worn it while banking some serious miles in all sorts of weather, we are happy to give it a big thumbs up.  In truth this is nothing short of “jacket art”; it uses breathable, wind and water-proof Polartec NeoShell on the front panels, shoulders and outer arms - essentially the front facing areas which need the greatest protection.  Then the overall warmth is boosted by lining the front and back panels with Polartec’s Alpha Direct to keep the core body temperature up.  And to keep the balance between warmth and breathabiity the areas under the arms, between the shoulders and down the centre of the back are free from insulation and these panels feature the third fabric, Polartec Power Shield Pro, a very lightweight breathable fabric, which allows heat and sweat to move away from the body.

dhb Aeron LAB Women's All Winter Jacket

Clearly the dhb Aeron LAB Women's All Winter Jacket has not just been thrown together.  Apparently it is the first cycling jacket to use three different fabrics from Polartec and the overall effect is a wonderfully lightweight, warm where it needs to be and breathable too, it is a really high tech top layer that offers excellent protection from wind and water, with just enough stretch to make it really comfortable while riding.

With the amazing fabrics from Polartec, dhb have pushed the boundaries of what you can expect from a winter jacket.  In keeping with the Aeron LAB range this is a race fit jacket which hugs the body and is properly aero – there is no excess fabric here and so if you thought dressing for winter training required thick unflattering layers then you are in for a surprise.

The design of the dhb Aeron LAB Women's All Winter Jacket is nicely finished with a wide band of heavily elasticated silicone gripper around the hem and it really does a great job at stopping the jacket from riding up.  Then there are three deep pockets on the back, plus a zipped pocket that easily accommodated our iPhone X.  In addition, dhb have added some nice touches that are in keeping with a jacket at this price range, including a strip of wind protection fabric behind the zip, which is piped with reflective material and there is a port to stop the zip pull from chafing the chin.  There are also reflectives down the front and back of the body, as well as on the arms.

The tag line for the Aeron LAB range is “Ride Like It’s Summer” which we thought was a little ambitious but now that we have had a chance to try the kit, we get it.  These are layers that work so hard that you can trust them to keep you protected from the elements and to support your training even when you need to throw in some high intensity intervals.  Warm, breathable, lightweight and designed to work with a body on the bike the dhb Aeron LAB Women's All Winter Jacket is performance kit at its best.
