Craft Women’s Essence Bib Shorts

It’s official, cycling is the most popular family activity for outdoor exercise during the UK’s lockdown, that’s according to a new survey conducted by OnePoll.  Apparently 35% voted cycling as the outdoor exercise they’d feel most confident in doing during the lockdown, followed by walking (29%), wildlife trails (25%), jogging (20%) and climbing (16%).  So if you want to invest in some every day pieces that offer comfort and functionality way beyond their billing, look no further than the Craft Essence range.

For us the lockdown has been made bearable by the scorching weather and the freedom to get out on our bikes, all of which has added up to the perfect opportunity to test some new kit.  The Craft Essence bib tights have seen some serious action and we’ve been wearing them with the completely stunning Craft Women’s Essence Jersey, which we will be reviewing shortly.

The Craft Essence bib tights use a super-stretchy recycled polyamide and also feature Lycra Sport Energy compression fabric with 4-way stretch.  Together they give a strongly supportive feel from fabrics which wick away sweat very effectively and which appear to stand the test of time – despite repeated wearing and washing they still look like new and have kept their shape perfectly.

Crucially, despite the “essentials” tag, Craft have not held back on the pad for the Essence bib tights.  The women’s-specific C3 Infinity pad has recently been upgraded with a new shape, dimensions, fabric, foam and design all of which, in our opinion, work exceptionally well.  Interestingly the pad itself is also made of recycled polyamide which might not immediately chime with your idea of comfort but we have not once felt there was any compromise.

A particular feature of the Craft Women’s Essence Bib Shorts are the bibs themselves.  Craft have used Econyl a 100% regenerated polyamide techno-fabric which they tell us is “two times more resistant to chlorine, suntan creams and oils than competitors’ fabrics”.  We like the breathability of the mesh fabric used but if we are honest we are more excited by the design of the straps.  These come over the shoulders, meet at the breast bone and then form a mono-bib strap which joins the shorts above the waistline, thereby removing any possibility of bunching or rolling at the waist when you are crouched over the bars.  It is just about the most comfortable and secure design we have tested and feels amazing mile after mile.

The Craft Women’s Essence eco-friendly bib shorts come in classic black, thereby conforming with Velominati Rule #14 “shorts should be black” but it is worth noting the colour is achieved with a solution dye process which is eco-friendly in that it uses less water, chemicals and energy that other dying processes.

The leg length is shorter than some at 22cm unstretched but they do stay perfectly in place thanks to a combination of wide elasticated panels and silicone print around the leg ends, so you can also adhere to Rule #7 “tan lines should be cultivated and kept razor sharp”.  They also come complete with a large reflective logo over the hip which you would not want to rely on alone but which definitely helps with visibility.

If you want to limit your impact on the environment but refuse to compromise on quality and comfort the Craft Essence range is for you, it offers classic designs made with recycled fabrics and outstanding comfort.  These bib shorts are already a firm favourite and look set to see some serious action this summer.
