Helly Hansen Solen Classic Watershorts

The Helly Hansen Solen Classic Watershorts are lightweight shorts that are stylish enough to be worn around town but with all the performance features you would demand from the technical clothing you would choose for hiking, sailing or camping.

The Helly Hansen Solen Classic Watershorts are lightweight, high performance, mid-length shorts made from technical and breathable fabrics with enough stretch to be really comfortable and offer sun protection too

It has to be really hot for us to reach for shorts but really hot is just what we had for the entire month of May and so we grabbed the Solen Classic Watershorts kindly sent to us by Helly Hansen, threw them on and well, what can we say, it was love at first wearing.  The design seems to work exceptionally well with our female curves – yes we’ve got plenty of those! – with the wide waistband sitting just below the natural waist and a leg length that is just long enough to make you feel covered up but plenty cool enough for the hottest weather.  The overall feel is light and airy, thanks to the high tech fabric we have come to expect from Helly Hansen, they are quick drying (a must for water shorts) but also able to wick away sweat for us land lubbers who will be using them for running, walking or a post cycle stretch session.

One of the surprising features of the Helly Hansen Solen Classic Watershorts is the freedom of movement that is afforded by the cut and the two way stretch fabric, which also offers UPF 50 sun protection and is naturally odour resistant.  This is thanks to the eco-friendly S.Café coffee ground technology which has been combined with Helly Hansen’s already awesome LIFA fabric.

The colour coordinated Solen range from Helly Hansen includes two options for shorts; classic watershorts with a 5” inside leg and printed watershorts with a 2.5” inside leg, plus the LIFA Active Solen Singlet, long sleeved and short sleeved shirts, as well as the hoodie (which we reviewed here) and it is all about keeping you cool and dry whatever you do to keep active, using highly breathable and technical fabrics which are 59% recycled.

For the watershorts there are a choice of three colours, which coordinate nicely with the other pieces in the range.  The waist is cut to fit very comfortably and is held together well with Velcro but there is also a drawstring for further security and there are two really useful pockets, one of which is zipped for keys or cash.  We tested the Glacier Blue version and really like piping in dark blue around the bottom of the legs, across the top of the pockets and waistband.

We have loved testing the Helly Hansen Solen Classic Watershorts, to wear them is to love them!  They are wonderfully versatile with performance features that make them great for workouts, comfortable enough for relaxation and smart enough to wear outside of an exercise setting.  These shorts will become a firm favourite whatever you do to keep sane at this crazy time and for a long time after.
