In our previous experience, what you get as standard from Nopinz is beautifully designed kit which combines highly technical fabrics with one of the most comfortable pads we have ever had the pleasure of using.  The result is a second skin like fit and a performance feel which leaves us searching for superlatives that really do it justice.

NoPinz have never been content to be a follower, they introduced the SpeedPocket back in 2015, the beautifully simple way to hold race numbers against the body in a pocket that was transparent, stretchy and, of course, so much more aerodynamic than any other solution.  By all accounts it was not a simple challenge but it was an instant hit with cyclists and the company has gone on to make some of the fastest speedsuits, overshoes, speed socks and other kit on the market.  We actually choose to use the SpeedPocket, socks, calf guards and overshoes from NoPinz when racing and happily pay the full retail price because we believe the products really are that much of a game changer.

So imagine our excitement when we heard that Blake Pond, founder of NoPinz and himself an elite cyclist, had set about making kit specific for indoor training.  We did not need a world pandemic and subsequent lockdown in the height of summer to realise that training indoors has its own particular demands.  Top of that list is over-heating and a close second is comfort in the saddle.  With the SubZero range, NoPinz set about tackling those in their typical manner, executing beautifully simple ideas with a genuine understanding of what we need and with no compromises along the way.

We are not suggesting it was easy to bring SubZero to life but there is something rather obvious about using replaceable frozen gel packs held against the body to cool it down.  We have in fact tried something similar to this ourselves when warming up at indoor track meetings in summer.  Of course the NoPinz SubZero range really takes this idea to another level, using incredibly lightweight, high performance cycling kit, with carefully placed “Freeze Pockets” which allow frozen gel packs to be held next to the body in key areas: between the shoulders, across the lower back and up the forearms.

The kit used in the SubZero range is itself worthy of more than a passing mention because it is some of the lightest we have come across.  It uses mesh panels everywhere, except where you need a more dense weave for the purposes of modesty, and this mesh feels so light we thought we might push our thumb through it just pulling it on.  Happily that has not been a problem, it is actually much more robust than it looks and once on it fits like a second skin.  Full marks also for the strip of silicone that runs around the base of the legs and keeps them from moving even a millimetre out of place.

We have had the NoPinz SubZero bib shorts and race suit on test for a few weeks now.  First impressions were all good, both fit perfectly, with plenty of stretch to allow for riding on the drops and the pad offers a level of comfort that is out of this world.  Riding indoors usually means sitting in the saddle for long periods of time and if the pad is not absolutely top notch, you will know pretty quickly.  We have put in some serious rides in this kit already, both in terms of intensity and hours and we can say with no hesitation that it really delivers on its promise.

And all of that is before we mention the FreezePockets which hold deliciously cooling frozen gel packs.  We have two sets and have chosen to warm up without them, then just before things get serious, we slip one in at the lower back, one between our shoulders and one into the sweat bands on each forearm.  It is worth saying that we were delighted by just how easy it is to get the pads in and out with both the bib shorts and the race suit, and there was no need to stop pedalling or faff about at all.  Once in we were super-cooled for 45 minutes to an hour of work on the bike, after which we swapped them out for a fresh set which were stored in their own zipped cool bag next to our bike.  Of course it would be a shorter time in the heat of summer or for those who have their turbo trainer set up in a heated house – our gym is on the cool side – but wherever you train, once you have tried NoPinz SubZero kit, you will wonder how you ever tolerated riding indoors without it.

The verdict is a huge thumbs up from us.  The combination of the very high quality kit Nopinz have used for their SubZero range allows for sweat to move away from the body very efficiently and the addition of the frozen gel packs is quite amazing.  We have felt more comfortable than ever before training indoors and have banked some maximal efforts, a few cheeky VO2 max sessions and some lower intensity but long hours riding at sweet-spot too – there is no doubt the kit has allowed us to really push on with our training.

The continuous cooling effect not only keeps you cool and comfortable, it will also help avoid dehydration and we have found the lower back pain we often suffer after long hours on the bike is reduced too.  We honestly believe NoPinz SubZero kit is a game changer for anyone who wants to train indoors and we have had to award it 10 out of 10 because there is absolutely nothing that we could suggest that could be better.

If you train or race indoors this is an investment you will not regret.  The range includes:

  • SubZero bib shorts £109.99
  • SubZero race suit £159.99 (for when you need to wear a top)
  • SubZero sweat bands £29.99
  • SubZero towel £12.49
